Why English willow
English willow is the standard for leather-ball cricket. It is lighter and more fibrous than Kashmir willow, so it compresses on impact and gives more ping off the face. Bats are graded by grain count, grain straightness and marks on the face: higher grades look cleaner and usually cost more, but a well-made mid-grade bat can play every bit as well.
Caring for an English willow bat
- Knock in a new bat before using it against a hard ball, unless the product page says it comes pre-knocked.
- Apply a light coat of raw linseed oil to uncovered faces as recommended, and avoid over-oiling.
- Keep the bat dry and out of extreme heat, such as a hot car trunk.
- Protect the toe: avoid digging out yorkers in the first few sessions.
